More than 400 fashionistas descended on the 10th annual Sunshine Coast International Fashion Festival held at the Events Centre Caloundra on Saturday 21 October. The event’s milestone was marked by a glamourous black and white dress theme and a stunning runway show that brought international, national and local labels to the Sunshine Coast. The 4th annual Sunshine Coast Design Awards were held on the same night with a host of eligible labels and designers showcased.

Event organiser and founder Jacinta Richmond, who wore a striking red dress on the night, said the awards were established to recognise the creative talent behind the brands. To be eligible, the designer must have established their brand or now be based on the Sunshine Coast. Industry leaders then judge the nominations and make the recommendations.

The winner of the Sunshine Coast Design Award for swimwear was Jessica Munroe for Indrah Swimwear, while Stephanie Gabriel for Ocean Zen took out the top honour for her ethical brand. Melanie Jeffers for Melanie J Designs took out both the top award for accessories as well as the Young Designer of the Year.

Adrian Norris and Edwina Robinson for Aje were honoured for their ready-to-wear collection and were also inducted into the Hall of Fame. Judy Copley for Judy Copley Couture won the top honour for her couture gowns.

The Sunshine Coast’s best dressed winner was also announced with Mooloolaba’s Trena-Jane Rowlands selected as the Coast’s most stylish. Trena-Jane said she was shocked to win the coveted style award.

“I felt so blessed to be nominated, even more humble to make the Top 10 and to win is such an incredible honour,” she said in a post to her fans on Facebook.

Trena-Jane offered a toast to the other nine finalists saying they are such stylish people who “ooze good taste and class” before thanking event organisers, the community and “those little girls inside all of us who like to play ‘dress ups’, just like me”.
