Alsahwa Farm: Down at the Farm

More than an eco lifestyle destination and regenerative farm, Alsahwa Farm is a place where a vision for a more sustainable world drives its entire philosophy. Rebecca Jamieson Dwyer discovers how the team are breaking new ground with their thoughtfully curated farmstore, hands on educational events and new fashion collaboration all focusing on Mind, Body and Planet.

The sun is setting on the final day of the Alsahwa Farm launch, and as the last few golden rays filter through the macadamia tree leaves, founder Jo Walker and her team are experiencing the buzz that comes from sharing their huge vision and magical location with a community of like-minded people over three wonderful days.

From a free community tree-planting session (where 150 saplings were planted!) and community film screening of Rachel Ward’s film Rachel’s Farm; to workshops on beekeeping, eco-living, a Terra Firma Cooking Masterclass, plus an Introduction to Permaculture masterclass and so much more; there was a common thread running through the weekend – learning how to get back to nature, rediscover our roots, understand the power of holistic wellness, and nourish the precious planet that sustains us.

An ex-entertainment industry executive, Jo Walker’s career (and life) pivoted in an entirely new direction once she was exposed to concepts around regenerative agriculture, and as she began to understand the intrinsic link between soil health and human health, she came to appreciate how vital this concept is for the time we live in.

In 2019, while driving in Sydney with her friend Kit Willow – the renowned fashion designer behind the luxury sustainable fashion brand KITX – Jo had a conversation that was to change the course of her life.

“We were discussing the state of the world, and Willow (Kit) said, ‘Joey, it’s not about sustainability anymore because we can’t sustain what we are doing right now, it’s about regeneration’,” recalls Jo.

“Minutes later in a serendipitous moment, an email popped up on my phone about an earth regeneration weekend in Bowral.

“That weekend started my journey to the regenerative space that is now Alsahwa Farm.”

Alsahwa and Kit have since collaborated on the KITX series of activism tees made from pure organic cotton, which help highlight some of the regenerative work that’s occurring on Alsahwa’s 38 acres: the Mushroom Tee for the mushroom forest of Lion’s Mane, Turkey Tail and Reishi that grows on logs; the Bee Tee for the on-site apiary; and the Koala Tee for the wildlife corridor of over 1000 trees that have been planted at Alsahwa Farm in the last few years, including a wildlife habitat tree planting as part of The Queen’s Jubilee.

Kit Willow says she hopes these garments can help promote change.

“The more we know the more we care; the more we care; the more we have the ability to change,” she says. “We do need to save our bees, understand the power of the underground fungi network and save our koalas and their habitat.

“The activism tees are designed to look good, feel good, and be good, and it’s an honour to collaborate with Alsahwa Farm to bring these tees to both men and women from one of the most beautiful nature havens on earth, the Noosa hinterland.”

The tees will be available at Alsahwa Farm’s permanent stall at Eumundi Square – a gorgeous space that features a range of thoughtfully-curated products such as lifestyle books, eco homewares, plants from their farm nursery and seasonal produce.

Alsahwa’s online store is launching 20 June, so no matter where in the country you hail from, it’s easy to support this mission-led brand and experience your own little bit of Alsahwa magic!

KITX’s range of activism tees, collaborated with Alsahwa Farm, will be available to purchase via the online store at www.alsahwa.com and through Alsahwa Farm’s Eumundi Square Farmstore, RRP $155.
